Top Tips For Ensuring You Don't Neglect Your Home As You Travel

As any keen traveler knows, returning home is never easy. It typically involves kissing goodbye to a place you’ve come to love, as well as the locals who made your stay special. The chances are that you intend to hide in bed for a while after returning, in an attempt to ease the sudden switch back to normality. But then something terrible happens – you return to find a problem.

From theft to natural disaster, these issues can make a difficult transition a whole lot harder, and could even see you needing to arrange alternative accommodation that keeps you from being able to readjust post-trip. This is a terrible situation, and there are plenty of articles out there about what to do if you return home to face these problems.

But did you know that your pre-trip preparations could be far better for protecting your home? These could certainly save you from ending a great trip with such a bump. But what protections should you actually put in place before you go? Keep reading to find out!

# 1 - Ensure Someone Checks in

We all know that thieves are more likely to target a house that looks empty, and if they’ve seen you grinning as you load bags into your car boot, then your property will automatically become fair game. This is a notable problem, but it’s one that you can solve by simply ensuring a neighbor or friend comes by your house now and again.

After all, thieves don’t know who lives at your house or not. If they’re watching your property and see someone going in and out, ideally at different times of the day, then they’re sure to be more wary and may even abandon their plans to break in altogether.

# 2 - Prepare a Pre-Trip Checklist

You’re probably busy planning your trip and packing your bags before you head away, but we’ve got another vital task for you to complete before your travels – the pre-trip checklist. The more little tasks you complete before you head away, the safer your whole house will be. This checklist is also useful because it highlights tasks that you might forget to complete otherwise, such as –

  • Switching off and unplugging your devices

  • Leaving the curtains open

  • Double-checking your windows and doors

  • Setting up your alarm system

# 3 - Getting Overseas Insurance

While it might not save your home itself, overseas home insurance guarantees that you can handle anything that happens. Unfortunately, not all home insurance plans include overseas insurance as standard. In fact, you’ll often find that your home insurance is null and void if your property is vacant.

Hence, our last tip is to always use a comparison site to find a reliable, travel-friendly home insurance policy. That way, even the worst post-travel homecomings will be a whole lot easier to manage, no matter what’s happened in your absence.

Travel is fantastic for the soul. Ensure that it’s fantastic for your home, too, using these top tips.
