Mother & Son Book review

Although I do not have a biological son, I have adopted a son and I love him like if I gave birth to him, this was a welcomed book for me to read more about this relationship

It is easy to relate to the need for all of us to feel a mother’s love, but is that the same thing as respect? Even for young boys, the effect of respect is nothing short of astounding when applied properly

Mom's are all about teaching Daddies how to treat their daughters but mom feels like she has no one to coach her and give her ideas on how to respect their sons at least not in a way that is applicable and fully explained. All realize that little girls need daddy’s love, but who is strongly promoting the truth that little boys (and big ones) need Mom's respect? No wonder mothers feel left in the dark on this topic.

Just as Emerson Eggerichs transformed millions of marital relationships with a biblical understanding of love and respect, he now turns these principles to one of the most important relationships of all, a mother and her son.

Chapter Titles are:

  1. Why This Book?
  2. Understanding What Respect Looks Like To Boys
  3. A Game Plan
  4. Seeing the Man in the Boy
  5. Respecting His Desire to Work and Achieve
  6. Respecting His Desire to Provide, Protect and Even Die
  7. Respecting His Desire to Be Strong and to Lead and to Make Decisions
  8. Respecting His Desire to Analyze, Solve and Counsel
  9. Respecting His Desire for a Shoulder-to-Shoulder Friendship
  10. Respecting His Desire for Sexual Understanding and "Knowing"
  11. An Empathetic Look at the Motherly Objections to Respecting a Boy
  12. Forgiveness

Weekend Recap

Friday:
I babysat my friends more like my other sister kids. Her boy is 5 months and her daughter is going to be 4 in a few months. We had fun, I loved having them here and they kept me busy. We played outside as much as we could with a 5 month old.

They are so sweet <3

We got an email from Brooke’s principal around 2 pm stating that there was a bomb threat at her school, all students were safe but it was the scariest thing I have ever went thru, I just wanted to reach out and have hug her and let her know that everything is ok. Thankfully she was ok when she got home, she said it was scary but she was ok with it.
I went to visit my friend at the hospital after learning that she has lung surgery, I am devastated but she is handling it quite well, I don’t think I could be so strong.
I went to see a movie with my friend Barb, we went to see Neighbours 2, it was a funny movie, I enjoyed the time with my friend, it felt good to relax and unwind from the stressful day.

Saturday:
A little low key morning while we were all lazy.
Brooke had a friend here all night so we took her home around 2 pm, then we went to town, Brooke and I went back to the hospital to spend some time with Carol Ann, I want to be there every waking minute with her but I can’t do that but I will spend a lot of time there.
We went to the mall after that and her and I did some shopping while Andrew was at a meeting for a conference he is hosting next weekend.
We got some groceries, then ran a couple of other errands, came home I made spicy buffalo dip and we watched Matilda as a family, we laughed a lot at silly things, danced around the house and had fun, it was a fun family day.
Brooke and I had a play time with the camera, I am by no means a photographer but I had a good subject so I did it.

Sunday:
When there are 5 Sundays in a month we have one morning service and then we have a pot luck and invite friends and hang out for the afternoon.
I decorated very basic today I had white linens with a tall vase with some bright colours, it looked basic but it brightened the room and I liked it.
We had to leave right after as it was Brooke's year end concert with the school band, they did an amazing job and I was proud. I did take a video but I have no idea how to get that on here...
Brooke then got called up for the spirit award as voted by her peers, I was an emotional mess, it makes ya feel good as a parent but I was so thrilled for her, her teacher had said some amazing words about her, here are the pictures:

She is all smiles.

So stinking proud
Our Youth Pastor went with her, Brooke really looks up to her and I am proud that she has a role model like her.

They also got the section award for Clarinets.

It was a great but busy day.
Hard to believe the school year is almost over.

Wise Guys book review

Even though guys appear to be big and burly and brave there are times when they need a “GPS” of sorts to show them how to get wisdom, even though men do not like to ask for directions ;)

The answers for the guys is possibly all around you, in those men before you, your great grandfather, grandfather, father etc. They have all been thru this thing called Life and it is perfectly okay to ask them for some instruction or advice.

Kent Evans has himself surrounded by wise guys, they show him the ways to wisdom, he shares some humour and endless supply of stories.
This is a great book that I truly enjoyed.

I am giving one copy to one of you, leave me a comment with your email and a guy that has impacted your life and I will pick one of you.

Bearing Witness- Review

What does it cost to follow Jesus....for the men and women in this book it meant everything, told sold out to follow him. They were ready to give witness to Christ in the face of intense persecution even if it cost them their lives.
We need people like that today, it is so easy for them now days to just quit when they are facing a trial or in a valley.
From the stoning of Stephen in first century Jerusalem to Nigerian Christians by Haram today.

These stories from around the world will inspire greater faithfulness to the way of Jesus, reminding us what costly discipleship looks like at any age.

The Longing in me- Book review

When I first saw the title of the book, I admit I thought it would be an interesting read but maybe not hit where I'm at right now. Knowing it was written by Sheila Walsh made me want to pick it up. I was given a digital copy from the publisher, but not required to write a review. The book opened my eyes so much that I bought a physical copy at my own expense. It touched places of hurt that I didn't know were there. It gently made me want to let go of areas I knew I needed to in order for God to bring something so much better.

Whether you have faith, aspire to faith, or are strong in your faith, this book cuts across all denominational and cultural lines and brings a personal story (Sheila Walsh's) paralleled with the accounts of David in the Old Testament Bible. So, that's the honest truth in a nutshell! Now, if you want to dig in deeper and find more than that, you can. I did. Sheila does a superlative job with words, crafting them to find common ground with any reader. This book that is currently in my collection will be one I read over and over again, not because it's too hard or heady but because there is so much GOOD STUFF in it that addresses the human condition, the needs we have, and the longings we have that often get filled in ways that are unhealthy or dangerous.

Hope Heals- Book Review

If there is one story you read this year, get this one..
When all seems lost, where can hope be found?
Katherine and Jay married right after college and went on an adventure far from home in Los Angeles, CA. As they pursued their dreams, they planted their lives in the city and in their church community. Their son, James, came along unexpectedly in the fall of 2007, and just 6 months later, everything changed in a moment for this young family.
On April 21, 2008, as James slept in the other room, Katherine collapsed, suffering a massive brain stem stroke without warning. Miraculously, Jay came home in time and called for help. Katherine was immediately rushed into micro-brain surgery, though her chance of survival was slim. As the sun rose the next morning, the surgeon proclaimed that Katherine had survived the removal of part of her brain, though her future recovery was completely uncertain. Yet in that moment, there was a spark of hope. Through 40 days on life support in the ICU and nearly 2 years in full-time brain rehab, that spark of hope was fanned into flame.
Defying every prognosis, with grit and grace, Katherine and Jay, side by side, struggled to regain a life for Katherine as she re-learned to talk and eat and walk. Returning home with a severely disabled body but a completely renewed purpose, they committed to celebrate this gift of a second chanceby embracing life fully, even though that life looked very different than they could have ever imagined. In the midst of continuing hardships and struggles, both in body and mind, Katherine and Jay found what we all long to find...hope, hope that heals the most broken place, our souls.
Now 8 years later they are living their new normal and they just announced a second baby for their family.
I could not stop reading this book. It is a story of suffering, restoration, and a Christ Centered hope as the ministry hope heals.

Weekend Recap

FRIDAY ~
I slept in and it was lovely. When I woke up I had a text from my friend back home in Newfoundland and she said she was in town and would love to meet for lunch.  It has been 7 years since I saw her, we chatted, we laughed, we shopped and we picked up right where we left off and now talking about taking a trip together.

It did my heart so good to see her, hang out with her and have a piece of home here. Sadly our visited came to an end and she had to go back home.

I bought some new sandals for summer, pretty teal pair and a black pair. it was a fun after noon

Friday Evening I was hosting a baby shower for a lady at church, it was a fun time, she is having a girl after 4 boys so there was lots of pink. Our theme was "New Little Princess" we were decorating in hearts and crowns.

The cupcakes had crowns sticking up from them

For food we did a dips and dessert's menu.

The center pieces were simple.. it was a vase with tissue paper and then we had crowns and hearts on little decorative sticks. It really did look pretty.

She got some adorable dresses and pretty girl things.

SATURDAY ~
After the exciting day of Friday I felt like today was super chill which was needed.
Brooke went to the church to make cookies with some youth girls for a fundraiser, they are selling them on Sunday.
Then we went to town and I went to Staples and Michael's looking for a planner for Brooke.. she is FINALLY a planner girl, I am excited to do that together.
Came home and made a spinach and ricotta ravioli in a rose hip sauce, oh my it was heavenly.
Took some time and laid on the patio with a book, the weather was so beautiful today. I wanted to stay outside all day.

SUNDAY~
We were not on set up duty today so we enjoyed the extra hour sleep. It was nice.
We had Sunday morning service and then a young guy came over for lunch, we grilled and it was a nice day.

Other than that it was a great weekend.

The League and the Lantern Review

Being some what of a history buff I have enjoyed this book immensely. Young adults will also enjoy this
A group of young adults really have a goal and they will stop at nothing to get their hands on the hat and gloves of President Lincoln. But what is their evil goal, and can the kids help stop them?
Things really heated up between the two after the Civil War. One wants to encourage fear and hate, and the other wants to preserve and protect our great nation. Several kids, all with strong personalities, wind up in the middle of all the drama: Jake Herndon, who learns a powerful secret about his family line; Lucy, a martial arts expert; and TJ, who has an over-active imagination; as well as a character named Greg.
The kids are portrayed realistically in this story, as they kid each other and talk about “Star Wars” and other things they enjoy, like “The Princess Bride.” The story includes chase scenes, mysteries to solve, and a growing bond between the kids. The author uses a vivid imagination to mix a bit of history with fiction. He also uses a biblical quotation, from Mark 3, that Lincoln used in a speech, which says that a house divided will fall. The mysteries get darker before they become clearer. Is the character Artie really a guy named Ed Chase? How does “The Great Northwestern Conspiracy” play into the suspense? Can the Order of the Dark Lantern, which operates in the shadows, be defeated? How about Anarchus Kane, the ultimate villain of the Civil War period?
