3 thrifty ideas for improving your home & garden

3 Thrifty Ideas for Improving Your Home & Garden

Home improvements are fun and exciting and go a long way toward improving your property. Perhaps you’re planning to sell soon, or maybe you just feel the home is looking a little old and tired. Well, it’s probably a good time to look at ideas you could use to improve the property. The problem is that home improvements cost money, and cash is already pretty tight as it is!

So, you need to come up with thrifty, money-saving ideas that will help you improve your home and garden without breaking the bank. There are loads of cool changes you can make, and you may already have some ideas in mind for things you want to do. Here are 3 budget-friendly ideas that will help you work on improving your home and garden.

1. Less is Sometimes More

It’s important that you understand that sometimes less is more when it comes to improving the home. Often people can overdo it and try to do too much to help improve their property, and this results in a bunch of stuff that doesn’t really work together. Especially in the garden, less is more, and it’s important that you understand this. If you can keep things stripped back and a little more basic you will find this really accentuates the strengths of the garden and the home. You don’t want a property that seems cluttered and confused, and that’s why it’s sometimes better to keep things simple.

2. Shop Around for Deals

There are plenty of places you can look if you want to get furniture or materials to help you improve the home. The best thing to do is make sure you shop around and look for sites you can find the best deals on. You can get quite a bit of awesome furniture and materials out there that will really add to your home and make it look a lot better. Getting the best deal possible is essential for allowing you to improve the property while tightening the purse strings at the same time. Make sure you do as much as you can to find the best value and even consider going for pre-owned pieces if necessary.

3. Go Greener

There is a movement these days toward a greener way of life, and it’s important to embrace that. As a homeowner in the modern world, you need to look at what you can do to improve the status of the home. Going green helps you be more eco-friendly, but will also save you money in the long run, not to mention producing a healthier home. Think about embracing renewable energy, recycling more, and upcycling unused bits of furniture. A greener way of life is just what your home needs to thrive and grow, and it’s also a thrifty way of making the property better in the long run as well.

These are just three of the great ways you can improve your home and garden on a budget. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make your home better, and this is proof of that. Coming up with ideas that will help you to achieve this is really important.

How to Overcome Challenges of Working Abroad

Working abroad is so exciting! You have probably happily entertained this thought while you were looking for available positions, and here it is!  Whether you have decided to start doing business in Brazil or France has been calling your name. It is now time for a new chapter in your life.  However, in some cases, the trouble usually starts right before the move or after you arrive. This is because you need to overcome the moment of letting go and getting used to the new circumstances.

The language barrier

The problem number one you may have, is the most obvious one, the language. If you are generally not good with languages and you find it extremely difficult to learn a new one, choose a country where your native tongue is spoken (or any other language you already speak). This will help you cope at both, professional and the personal level. Good communication is important for all aspects of life, and speaking the same language is the essence of it.

Cultural differences

Cultural differences should never be overlooked and undermined.  If you are traveling to a country which belongs to “the same world” and has similar values to where you come from, it is easy. The differences usually seem as minor nuisances, or even quite entertaining.
On the other hand, if you are traveling to a country with a different system of values, then this is something which requires a significant amount of preparation, e.g. moving from Central Europe to South Asia.  If you want to fit in, you will have to get informed and open to their views. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Professional etiquette

This is an extension of the previous paragraph, referring to cultural differences within a workplace. Perhaps, the office does not look the way you would expect it to look. Maybe you do not have everything you are used to having. Hopefully, these are your biggest problems. If you do not manage to find information of what is considered to be “professional” in the country you are moving to, pay close attention and implement what you see.
Of course, there are always exceptions to certain rules, but there are countries where people focus on punctuality, while in others they only care that the work gets done. Other places have businesses where overtime is encouraged, as opposed to stopping in the middle of the work and leaving at 5pm which is the case in certain countries. Eating at your desk may seem shocking to some, while others will share food and eat from the same dish with the same spoon in the middle of an office.

Conflicts with coworkers

Dealing with a conflict in the workplace is always challenging and you have to be extra careful. Any issues that may arise can be magnified by the fact that you are new, a foreigner, with possibly poor language skills, and potentially “stealing” someone’s job.
This type of conflict demands exceptional professional skills from the HR department. The chances are that they do not have enough experience to resolve this issue. This is when they should get professional workplace mediation services to assist. If they do not do it at first, remind them. A mediator will help you and your coworker understand each other’s point of view and overcome the communication barrier.

Training and support

Once you get to the new country, you will probably spend a lot of time working and learning new things. Training for a new job position is always stressful. There is a large amount of information you need to take in within a short period of time. You potentially even have to learn new skills. Doing all of that while starting off almost clueless and knowing that your position depends on it, can be very emotionally draining. It is always hard.
However, it is particularly hard if you are in a new country, surrounded by strangers without the professional, or emotional support to help you through this period. This is the right time to show confidence and ask for any further assistance you may need during the training. This will help you learn faster. Also, arrange times for long sessions with friends and family members at home, give them a call and let them be there for you.

Nostalgia, loneliness, and social life

At the very beginning you will spend a lot of time at work and with coworkers, but as you get into a routine you will have more and more time available for yourself. This free time is when people usually start getting lonely, particularly if you are unable to move with your spouse - although you may wish to work with someone like Immigration Mayfair to get a spouse visa that would allow them to immigrate and join you in your new home. While this is in the works though, or if this isn't even an option for you, keeping in touch with people from home can help, but it is still not the real thing.

Green home: A guide to buying energy efficient appliances

Green Home: A Guide to Buying Energy-Efficient Appliances

There are so many ways to make your home green, starting with replacing your light bulbs with LED ones all the way to installing solar panels on the roof of your home. Still, while the latter costs about $17.000 and it is easy to dismiss as ‘too expensive for most households’, what about the choice of appliances?
The price difference between power-saving appliances and their standard counterparts is not really that great, so there’s no excuse for not making the planet-saving choice. After all, when something is both Earth- and budget-friendly at the same time, it is a chance too good to be ignored. With this in mind, here is a brief guide to buying energy-efficient appliances.

Think about the size

Even though this may seem a bit too obvious, you need to understand that bigger appliances use more power and more water, it really is as simple. A massive washing machine consumes more energy to wash the same amount of laundry, so, they’re not worth buying unless you really have the need for this. On the other hand, if you have 9 people living inside of your home, it might be more cost-effective and even eco-friendlier to get a bigger appliance than to be forced to re-use your old ones more frequently. Same goes for a refrigerator and many other appliances out there.

Repairing and replacing

Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that replacing your old appliances also creates waste, therefore increasing your household’s carbon footprint. In order to avoid this, you might want to contact experts behind agencies like Total Appliance repair and ask if it’s worth to repair an old machine. Keep in mind that an older appliance and fixture spend more power, which is why replacing them still might be worth your while in the long run. Nonetheless, replacing an item as soon as it misbehaves is definitely not a good idea.

Compare estimated energy use

When it comes to picking an appliance in 2018, it’s quite easy to be efficient, seeing as how all of these devices have a displayed estimated energy use. This means that you can make a side-by-side comparison on your phone or laptop. In this way, you can make a calculation of how much you stand to save in a month or a year. Then, try to calculate how long will it take until this device covers its own cost. Sure, this isn’t always the case since you might replace it beforehand, yet, the cost reduction is always a thing worth keeping in mind.

Look at the label

Finally, this is a rule that’s applicable to both electronic devices and water fixtures. A truly green device usually has an Energy Star logo (at least in the U.S.). This symbol alone is an indicator that the device you’re looking at stands to save you quite a bit of cash. Nevertheless, there is a great difference even between various power-saving appliances and, seeing as how this is not a purchase you’re making every day, it’s always worth getting into the specifics.

As we stated in the previous paragraph, renewing your household appliances is something you do once every several years, perhaps even once every decade. This means that the choice you make right now is the one that’s going to affect both your household budget and your conscience for years to come. After all, how can you justify ignoring the ramifications of your laziness on the environment, especially in the era of the internet, where all of this information is merely a click away.

7 Ways You Can Make Your Lifestyle Healthier

Feeling like there are some things you are just not doing right, or like you’re neglecting yourself? Your exhausted body’s crying for help, and your mind has had enough of it all – the chaos, the information overload, the drama and stress? Sounds like it may be just the time for a lifestyle makeover.

1 – Work on your relationships

Our social encounters have a huge impact on our lives. Sometimes they are a source of joy and spiritual fulfillment, sometimes of unpleasantness and worry. They affect our mental state, emotions, even our physical wellbeing. Maintain and nurture healthy, stable relationships with the people in your everyday life – your colleagues, family members, friends, romantic partner, etc. By doing so, you are improving your mood, eliminating a lot of possible stress, and allowing yourself to truly enjoy the company of those around you.

2 – Spend more time outdoors

Going for a nice long walk in a nearby park, for example, can do you good in more than one way, particularly in daylight. It can significantly improve your mood, because of the physical activity and exposure to sunlight, which you simply cannot get if you are trapped indoors. You’ll be able to focus better, regulate your sleep, and boost your creativity. Moreover, spending time in the sunlight helps your body produce more vitamin D. It is also said that indoor pollution is actually quite higher than the air pollution outdoors.

3 – Exercise

Not only does working out increase the production of serotonin, it also keeps the body strong, healthy, and more resistant to harmful stimuli. It is one of the most powerful ways of fighting the dangers that come with a sedentary lifestyle. Become engaged in aerobics, jogging, pilates, dancing, or any kind of sport or physical activity you find enjoyable. You can also explore the numerous benefits of quality compression clothing that can make your workout sessions even more effective; it boosts your performance, improves the circulation in your limbs, and helps the body, especially muscles, recover faster after extremely strenuous workouts.

4 – Reduce stress

Try avoiding stressful situations, as they can have a variety of undesirable consequences on your overall wellbeing and behavior. Do more of what makes you relax – listen to your favorite music, dance, meditate, do yoga, spend more time with friends, pay more attention to your hobbies, etc.

5 – Give your body and mind the sleep they need

Sleep plays a highly important role in maintaining mental and physical health. Sleep deprivation or irregular sleep affects your immune system, heart, ability to concentrate, performance at work, mood and motivation, appetite… the list goes on. That is why it is advisable to learn more about the importance of sleep and teach yourself not to treat sleep as a second-rate necessity.

6 – Improve your nutrition

The body needs proper nourishment in order to maintain its health and prevent possible illnesses that poor nutrition can cause. Improving nutrition strengthens the immune system, helps you feel more energized, has a positive influence on your blood pressure, and so on. Make sure to eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, preferably lean meat, and other low-calorie foods that are rich in nutrients and vitamins.

7 – Say goodbye to unhealthy habits

The main effects and risks of smoking and excessive drinking are already well known. So, is it really worth it, bearing in mind the overall damage we inflict upon ourselves? Instead of letting bad habits control us, we can learn to control them, which can only be achieved if we are truly dedicated and determined. An occasional glass of wine or a cigarette once in a couple of months is tolerable, since after all we cannot live completely isolated from all the things that are bad for us. The key is in moderation.

Naturally, there are many other ways of helping yourself become a happier, healthier individual. So, keep an open mind and raise your awareness of the kind of lifestyle you are leading.

Don't just do well in life, do good

For a lot of people, there are few things in life more important than doing well. No matter what you're doing in your life, whether it's your career, your relationships, your hobbies, or your social life, doing well and succeeding at the things that you do is a high priority for many people and with good reason. After all, that kind of success is often the key to a lot of people's happiness. And this happiness doesn’t just come from receiving the best promotions. What happens when that kind of thing starts to feel as though it's not really enough? A lot of people find themselves doing well at many things in life but still end up feeling somehow unfulfilled. This is actually surprisingly common, and a lot of people end up going through life not really able to understand what's causing them to feel that way. For a lot of peopl e, the solution is actually rather simple. Rather than focusing exclusively on doing well in life, it can often be a lot more fulfilling to try and live your life in a way that does the most good for those around you. With that in mind, here are a few ways that you can start to not just to do well in life, but start doing some good as well!

Change your career

beautiful, businesswomen, career

For a lot of people, one of the most frustrating things about their job is that they end up feeling as though there's no real purpose to their career outside of trying to make money for their employer. Sure, being able to take home a paycheck at the end of each month is important and is pretty essential for you, but doesn't it feel as though you could be doing more with your career than making your boss as much money as possible? If that's something that bothers you then why not consider changing your career path over to something where you're doing some good in the world. Whether it's working for charities and non-profit organizations, or working within a field like education or medicine where you're directly impacting the lives of others in a positive way, there are plenty of career options that allow you to make a positive difference in the world as well as supporting yourself and your family.

Start volunteering

Of course, you might be perfectly satisfied with your career. After all, personal fulfillment is incredibly important when considering your employment. But that doesn't mean you can't get out there and help people. Pretty much all charities and non-profit organizations need volunteers to help them. Why not find a cause that really resonates with you and start volunteering. The simple act of helping others without the expectation of reward is one of the most fulfilling things that you can do in your life. Whatever cause you support, there are almost certainly going to be organizations out there that could dearly use your help.

Find other ways to help people

adult, business, close-up

Of course, volunteering with an organization is far from the only way to help people around you. There are plenty of things that you can do on a much more personal level. One of the most amazing things that you could do for someone else, provided you have the right body parts, is to act as a surrogate. Being able to help someone else start a family when they might not otherwise be able to is one of the most fulfilling things there is, and it takes a great deal of bravery and sacrifice to do so. If you're interested in something like that and want information, then you can view more here. Sure, this might not be the right choice for everyone, and it's certainly not the only way that you can help people, but it's an example of the kind of personal things that you can do for other people to improve the lives of those around you in a real, tangible way.

Use what you need, give away the rest

Here's the hard truth: most of us are living on far more than we need. Now, there's nothing wrong with that. After all, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to afford luxuries when you go out every day and work hard for the money that you earn. But at the same time, there are plenty of people who work just as hard as you, perhaps even working multiple jobs, who are barely able to scrape by. It's a serious injustice but modern society is built on this kind of inequality. If you want to try and address that kind of inequality then why not think about cutting back on your own use of luxuries? See what you can to do to cut back on the things that you really don't need. You'll often find that you can save huge amounts of money that way. Then, why not think about giving some of that money away to people and organizations that really need it. Now, no one should feel as though they are obligated to give away a portion of their paycheck, but if you're bothered by the inequality in modern society, and you're in a position to do something about it, this is, at the very least, an option for you.

Now, don't worry if this kind of thing starts to feel somewhat difficult for you. The truth is that there are very few people who are hard-wired from birth to base all of their decisions around other people. The truth is that most of us are pretty well conditioned from an early age to believe that the best way to live a happy life is to focus exclusively on our own needs and desires. However, with a little time and patience, you may well find that living your life in service of making the world a better place for others as well as yourself can be one of the most gratifying and affirming things that you can possibly do. Of course, that doesn't mean that you suddenly have to give up thinking about yourself entirely. After all, if you can't take care of yourself, you certainly aren't going to be able to take care of anyone else!

Preparing Your Home for Summer ( Guest Post)

With summer almost here, you already start to dread the hot days when even five minutes in the sun get you sweating. However, summer is a perfect excuse to do a small home makeover and prepare for the days when you will spend a lot of time in the shade. This is not anything expensive and some remodeling you can do on your own as a DIY project.

•        Clean your backyard

Usually, many tend gardens in the spring, but backyards stay quite neglected until late in the summer when you declutter them in the scorching sun. To avoid something so uncomfortable, start today. Declutter the mess made from foliage and overgrown plants, remove everything that doesn’t belong there and take a good look around.

There are several simple and not too demanding things you can do to create a gorgeous spot to enjoy summer evenings, entertain guests or create a vegetable garden. Start with assessing the state of your fence and fix it where needed. If you have a wooden one, consider painting it in a different color since this will give a different tone to your yard.

Add some awnings for shade and potted plants to cool the temperature down. If you don’t have grass, consider turning the ground into a lawn. One of the elegant and easy things to build is a fire pit. It will take you several hours to do so but during the summer nights, this will be the main attraction. Fruit trees are always a nice addition and you can choose from the variety of dwarf ones.

•        Create a shade

Curtains are a nice way to obscure enough light so you aren’t blinded by the sun. If your home faces the sunny side completely, then consider installing shutters or shades. These will help you limit the amount of sun that comes inside and also keep your home cooler.

If you have a balcony or patio, create a temporary shading solution with a canvas or sunshade. This will also be good for the plants which you should definitely have on your balcony since they refresh the space. Check the sealants on windows and doors so the cool air wouldn’t escape out, and increase the energy consumption for your cooling unit. This outer space is also a great spot for the seating set where you can dine, relax and even work.

•        Clean your air conditioning unit

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your air conditioning unit are important to preserve the health of you and your family. Dust, dirt, and bacteria collect in the units over time and you have to make sure that they don't contaminate the air in your home.

As pointed out by the Climacool company: “A poorly installed or maintained system will not provide a quality heating and cooling service.” Additionally, the neglected units could create higher energy consumption and increase your bills. You should so a comprehensive servicing once a year and always before the period you know you will use it a lot. Clean the outer shell regularly with antibacterial agents and wash the inner filters with water at least once a month.

•        Change the décor

If you think that it’s time to make a few changes to redefine your space, then certainly do so before the summer. Spring is an ideal time to start the big cleaning of the house and renovations. You can remove some things, like blankets from the sofa or a thickly woven rug, and replace them with lighter versions.

Try some Wabi-Sabi decorative suggestions since it’s all about the natural and organic shapes and in trend this year. Paint the walls if necessary or add something new to the mix, like a detail here and there.

A new painting or mirror can mean a lot if you are not ready for any bigger changes. Fresh flowers in the vase or flowery details on the curtains, cushions or walls are also trendy this year, as are earthy tones and natural materials.

•        Try eco-friendly ideas

Preparing for the summer is an ideal time to join the global movement dedicated to saving our environment with simple eco-friendly ideas. If you have a garden, use solar lamps to light the path to the house. You can use these for the backyard, as well as candles in the enclosed candle holders, maybe just a simple jar.

Instead of using the water from the waterworks for irrigation, place a large barrel to collect rainwater since spring is the perfect time for that. All the foliage you collected can become compost which is a great fertilizer for the plants. Plant some wildflowers to attract the natural pollinators like butterflies and bees. If there are birds around your home, build them feeders and houses.

Lastly

There are so many things a person can to before the summer so they can spend that period in a more relaxing manner. Heat can be quite a nuisance for those who have to go outside or do something. That is why preparing your home in the spring will give you an ideal space to cool over the summer.
