6 Household Item You Can't Live Without

With tech companies making an awful lot of products that not everyone needs ($4,000 rollable TV, anyone?), I think you'll agree with me when I say that there are many essential household items that anyone could use. If you have kids, a job—or both—then there are some things your home just can't do without.

Here are six of my favorite essential household products that help me get through the day and make life, in general, a little less stressful.

1. A Good Coffee Machine
If you saw the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, you may remember the scene where the Queen guys are having an argument (over a song called "I'm In Love With My Car"), prompting Roger Taylor to threaten to throw the coffee percolator at them. "Not the coffee machine!" the others cry out.

Exactly—I know I couldn't live without a good, hot cup of Joe in the morning. And it doesn't matter whether you prefer your coffee via a French press or a single-cup brewer. Once you find the machine that brews the BEST cup of coffee for your tastebuds, hold onto that baby tight and never let it go. Savoring sips of coffee is one way to get through a hard day.

2. Vacuum Cleaner
How did people keep their homes clean and sanitary before the advent of electricity and vacuum cleaners? I don't want to know, but I'm positive I couldn't spend hours hanging out my rugs and beating the dirt and dust out of them by hand. And how did Victorians deal with those allergens floating around their homes? Everyone needs a vacuum to help prevent allergies.

Find yourself a vacuum cleaner that's easy to tote around and equipped with attachments long enough to reach ceiling cobwebs and can suck up dust bunnies and potato chip crumbles from the nooks and crannies in your home as well as your vehicle. I personally love a bagless model; the clear plastic canister shows me exactly what I'm picking up.

3. Air Filter/Purifier
In that same vein, I think every home needs an air filter to help deal with life's smelly messes (or messy smells.) When you or your hubby burns dinner or someone has to make a lengthy bathroom visit, an air filter saves the day.

Not to mention, this is a gadget that helps improve air quality in your home when used on a regular basis, helping you to get a better night's sleep.

4. Laundry Basket
I know what you're thinking: did she just say a laundry basket is an essential household item to have? Absolutely, friends. You see, a laundry basket isn't just for toting laundry...

It's a homeowner's BFF when unexpected company announces they're coming over on short notice and you need to wrangle up toys, magazines, stray clothing, and who knows what else to make the living room walkable. Then you just take it and tuck it away out of sight in another room.

5. Clothing Moth Traps
It sounds weird and gross, but trust me on this one: you need to stock up on clothing moth traps because you never know when one of these nasty critters will infest your home and wreak havoc on your woolen clothing and goods. Actually, it's the babies of these straw-colored insects that love to munch on natural fibers but considering how many eggs a casemaking clothing moth can lay, it becomes a vicious cycle if you don't kill them all. It’s enough to make someone feel like Sigourney Weaver in the Alien movies.

My favorite are Greenway natural glue traps. They contain no poison; just a safe pheromone-infused dot that attracts lovelorn moths to their deaths. The same company makes fruit fly traps as well.

6. Funnel
You'd be surprised how often a funnel comes in handy, whether you need to add more oil to your car or you want to pour homemade salad dressing into small bottles to bring to work with your lunch. Keep one in your kitchen gadget drawer for those times where you don't want to make a mess pouring something greasy or syrupy into a container.

I hope my list of essential household items has inspired you to add these to your shopping list the next time you make a store run. What products do you own that you can't live without? Let me know in the comments below!
