Five Areas Of Your Home That You Probably Haven't Cleaned In A While

When it comes to staying on top of household cleaning chores, we have our go-to cleaning regimes - vacuum the floor, wipe the countertops, clean the bathroom, etc. but with life forever trying to get in the way and plenty of other things that need to get done, certain areas can go un-cleaned and neglected for months, if not years! Here are five areas of your home that you may not have cleaned in a while.
  1. Your garage floor

Garages tend to be neglected because they are often considered to be an outside space. It may be out of sight and out of mind, but although your garage floor may not be the first thing that visitors see when they enter your home, dust and dirt can quickly build up and will be brought into your property and car on the soles of your shoes. Cleaning garage flooring may not be fun, but it’s a job that needs doing every now and then.
  1. Your washing machine

Washing machines clean clothes, so they must clean themselves, right? Sadly, that isn’t so. The drum of your washing machine may stay clean but the detergent draw, the seal around the door, and the inner workings quite often become clogged with soap residue, scum, and even mold. Every once in a while, put your washing machine on a cleanse cycle with some washing machine cleaner, and wipe around the door seal and inside the detergent compartment.
  1. Your light fixtures

Lampshades and light fixtures provide the perfect place for dust to settle. They may be up high and a little awkward to reach, but a quick wipe over with a dry cloth can help to reduce dust accumulation and to keep pesky spider webs at bay. Make sure to use a sturdy ladder or a chair when operating at heights during a deep clean of your home, and ideally have a second person nearby to spot you in case you fall.
  1. Your fridge

Food goes in and food comes out, but when was the last time you properly emptied your fridge and gave it a good clean? Although fridges are designed to keep bacteria at bay by operating at a low temperature, they don’t stop bacteria growth completely and so it is essential to give them a proper scrub with disinfectant or hot soapy water every once in a while. The best time to clean your fridge is just before you go grocery shopping because it tends to be at its emptiest.
  1. Your chimney

If you have a working fireplace, then failing to properly clean your chimney can actually become a safety hazard. Chimney fires are surprisingly common and can be very dangerous potentially causing fire damage to other areas of your home. Although a messy job that usually requires professional assistance, cleaning your chimney is extremely important as it stops soot and debris from building up, which if left untreated could catch fire.

So there you have it - five areas of your home that you probably haven’t cleaned in a while. Are you guilty of any of these?
