How difficult is it to maintain a swimming pool, really?

There’s no denying that swimming pools sound like a wonderful idea. After all, a swimming pool allows you to keep cool in the summer heat, exercise at your convenience, and - according to some experts - can even help to boost the value of your home.

However, despite a near-universal understanding of the benefits of a swimming pool, the vast majority of homeowners will choose to go without. While there are many reasons homeowners decide against a swimming pool, one of the most commonly mentioned is a concern about maintenance. Swimming pools, people believe, may be an excellent addition to their home, but they require too much hassle and maintenance to be truly justifiable. This reason is so often stated, it’s tempting to accept it as read - but are swimming pools really as problematic as many of us have been led to believe?

The answer is… sort of

Do swimming pools require maintenance? Yes.

With maintaining a swimming pool add to your list of household maintenance chores? Yes.

Can maintaining a swimming pool add to your monthly outgoings? Yes.

Reading through the above, it’s tempting to immediately say that the case is closed, and swimming pools are every bit as problematic as thought. However, there’s a nuance that is missing from this argument.

What do you stand to gain from a swimming pool?

Can a swimming pool genuinely boost your lifestyle, especially in the summer months? Yes.

Can a swimming pool help you to enjoy one of the most beneficial forms of exercise - swimming - in the comfort of your own home? Yes.

Could having a swimming pool installed mean you can save money in other areas, such as gym memberships? Yes.

Due to this over-focus on the maintenance of a swimming pool, it’s often easy to forget that there are plenty of benefits to be enjoyed, some of which could help to save you time and improve your overall lifestyle. Viewed through this lens, swimming pools can suddenly begin to seem a little more reasonable.

Still concerned? Consider this…

No home is maintenance-free. Every room of every house in every part of the world requires maintenance. For example, if you were considering installing a conservatory, would maintenance factor into your decision-making process? Perhaps to an extent, but it would not be anywhere near as significant a factor as it would be when considering whether to Remodel your pool for summer - yet conservatories require cleaning, fixing, mending, and maintaining, too.

Ultimately, this over-focus on the need to maintain swimming pools has clouded the ability to make a decision that suits you. If you feel that you could benefit from a swimming pool, base your decision on this. Of course, the maintenance and the occasional pool service will remain necessary to keep your pool working correctly, but this shouldn’t be the decisive factor in your decision. After all, you wouldn't not buy a car you needed and badly wanted simply because you have to keep it clean and running well.
First and foremost, the maintenance needs are often overstated - particularly if you stay on top of little problems as they arrive, rather than waiting for the whole system to break down - and, secondly, there are ways and means of reducing the maintenance burden anyway; you can hire pool care specialists relatively inexpensively, and the likes of Miracle Maintenance blasting services are perfect for the occasional deep-clean - like anything in your home, there are ways and means of making the maintenance more manageable if you wish.

So, should you install a swimming pool?

The answer to this question is entirely subjective; we’re not trying to persuade you that a pool is 100% the right decision - we’re just pointing out that the maintenance demands tend to be overstated. It’s therefore best to consider the maintenance aspect if you’re tempted to install a swimming pool, but to keep in mind the fact that the maintenance element is often exaggerated - so it’s best to make a decision that weighs all the factors, both good and bad, when deciding whether a swimming pool is right for your home.
