6 cardinal sleeps you may be committing

A good night’s sleep is something that sadly eludes many of us, and there are many reasons why this may be the case. Even if you can get to sleep, you may not feel your best the next morning because you are committing one or more of the following sleep sins. Can you relate to any of the following?

Only Using Pillows for Your Head

This may seem like a strange one to get started with, but pillows can also be used as a good means of support for other parts of your body - not just your head and neck. If you are a back or side sleeper, using a pillow in between your knees can help to support your spine and legs.

Sleeping on Your Stomach

Not only is sleeping on your stomach bad for your spine, it also affects your digestive system. So, after a night’s sleep, you may find yourself waking up feeling stiff and sore. One way that you can resolve this issue is by placing a tennis ball in the front pocket of your pyjamas. Every time you try to sleep on your stomach, you will feel uncomfortable and have to change position.

Not Having a Sleep Schedule

Since we all live such busy lives these days, sticking to a consistent sleep schedule can seem like an incredibly tough ask. But if you don’t have a regular bedtime, your body will remain in a state of confusion in which it doesn’t know when it should be awake and when it should be asleep. If you are serious about getting a better night’s sleep, you should aim for a consistent bed and wake-up time - even on the weekends and holidays.

Going to Sleep on a Full Stomach

When you have your final meal of the day, you should try to make it at least three hours before your bedtime. This way, you are giving your body plenty of time to absorb the food. Otherwise, you could end up causing yourself conditions like acidic reflux and heartburn which wake you up in the middle of the night.

Sleeping on a Bad Mattress

If your mattress is old or low-quality, this can cause a disruption in sleep and pain the next morning. Check out the different mattress options that you have available to find one that is right for you - perhaps one in which the gel was made famous by Serta. Make sure that you replace your mattress every few years as otherwise it can start to sag and sink.

Going to Bed with Your Phone

If you have ever been woken up by that tiny blinking notification alert, you will already be well aware how much your phone can disturb your sleep. So, keep all of your gadgets well away from you, and out of the bedroom if possible. If you use your phone for an alarm, try using a cover and putting it on silent mode so you are not woken up during the night.
