7 Hobby Ideas for Water Lovers

We call the globe ‘earth’; but really, if humans were as smart as they thought they were, it would be called ‘water.’ More than 70% of the surface of the planet we call home is covered in water, and that means a lot of things. First. We’re able to drink as much as we please, and have a connected, liquid pathway linking all the countries. Nice! But it also means that we have plenty of opportunities for fun activities. If you live near a beach, or you’re travelling to somewhere famous for its waters, then check out some of the aqua activities we’ve outlined below. You’ll soon be in love with the freedom and primal joys that go along with spending time out on the water!

Serious about Swimming

There are plenty of benefits to swimming. It’s a highly effective, low-intensity workout, for starters. But most people only ever practice their swimming in indoor pools, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, you’d have to be seriously into swimming for it to never become boring. That all changes when you’re in the outdoors, however. Out there, you’ll be one with nature, swimming with the fish, and maybe getting a tan in the process. There’s also something thrilling about never knowing whether it’s going to a calm day in the sea, or if you’re going to be doing battle with the waves. Of course, you’ll want to start small in order to stay safe.

A Relaxing Journey

Of course, some people don’t like the idea of plunging into natural water, especially if it’s pretty chilly! If you’re one of those people, then fear not - there’s an activity that you can do all the year-round, one that allows you to enjoy all the benefits of the watery outdoors without getting wet. We’re talking about canoeing, which is an activity steeped in history, and which offers a thoroughly enjoying and relaxing day out on the water. The beauty of this is that you don’t need all that much to get going. Simply locate a river or lake, hire a canoe and paddles, and get out there. It’s easy to do, too.

Under the Sea

Who wouldn’t like to live like a fish? OK, maybe it would get a bit old if you had to spend the rest of your days like our sea-dwelling cousins, but for an hour or two? Yupp, sign us up. You’ll want to start your diving journey with a course, which will take you through the basics of how to do it - and give you some much-needed practice underwater. Once you’ve got the essentials down, you’ll be able to ask questions like, ‘what's the difference between air, nitrox and trimix diving?’ and ‘where are the world’s best diving spots?’ Few people who take up the activity ever regret. If you’ve explored the world’s best above ground spots, it’s time to get down and see what’s going on under the sea.

Moving Fast

If the quaint canoe experience we described above wasn’t quite up your street, then have a think about jet skiing. This is more of a rock and roll activity, one that gets you moving at incredible speeds as you skim across the water. It’s not for the faint hearted - you’ll be moving quickly as we said - but if you stomach the speed, then you’ll be able to enjoy many a thrilling ride. It’s also quite practical; you’ll get to explore many different regions in no time at all. You can also consider white water rafting for taking in nature a bit more, but still enjoy white-knuckling it now and then

Surf’s Up

You’ve probably seen awesome YouTube videos of long-haired surfers doing their thing at some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. While the worlds best can make it look intimidatingly difficult, it’s really not. It’s a bit like skiing: if you’re willing to endure the times when you kind of suck at it, you’ll eventually overcome the teething problems and find a hobby that you love. There are few things better than spending the day at the beach when the surf’s up!

From Afar

Of course, not all hobbies connected with water have to be so intimate. The ocean has long been a source of great inspiration for writers, artists, poets, and more. If you live near a body of water and are looking for a relaxing way to spend the day, then have a look at painting for beginners. It’s not as difficult as you might think, and once you’ve got the basics down, you’ll have a never-ending source of inspiration. The water shall be your muse!
