Advice on being healthier this winter


Winter is a joyous season in so many ways. The most enjoyable part of the season is Christmas, obviously. The festivities of this time of the year are sure to fill you with a warm and fuzzy feeling. The cold weather, however, probably isn’t filling you with a warm and fuzzy feeling. Other than the possibility of snow, there isn’t much good to come out of freezing cold temperatures. And on a practical level, the main thing on your mind should be your health. We’re all prone to colds and illnesses once the temperature starts to drop so here’s some advice on being healthier this winter.

Don’t overeat.
It’s tempting to over-indulge in treats over Christmas but this should be avoided if you want to stay healthy. Obviously, your body needs more energy over winter in order to replenish itself, but you need to eat the right things. You can still enjoy treats but enjoy them in moderation.

Sleep well.
This is advice that applies throughout the year but it’s of particular importance during winter. The icy months really take their toll on your health and you need to sleep well in order for your body to recover. Rest is the best recipe for a bad cold and it’s the best preventative measure in that regard too. You should be aiming to get 8 hours of sleep every night but it varies from person to person. Maybe 6 hours is sufficient for you or maybe you need 9 in order to feel well-rested. Your personal judgement needs to play a factor here.

However, the amount of sleep you get isn’t the only thing that counts when it comes to being well-rested. You need to make sure that your body is well-supported and comfortable whilst you sleep so as to ensure that you’re recovering and resting properly after a long day. Of course, you might be spending time traveling and seeing relatives a lot over the holiday season, but that doesn’t mean you should neglect your health. Prioritize your mental health.
Seasonal depression is a very real problem from which many people suffer. That’s why it’s so important to take care of your mental health during the winter. Again, as with all the health advice in this article, you need to look after your mind throughout the year but it’s particularly important to check in with your mind during the colder months. The festivities of Christmas aren’t always enough to fill you with joy so focus on ways to improve your mental health in a deeper sense. Talk with friends and other loved ones if you’re struggling; let them help you because you don’t have to carry the weight of your worries alone.
