Finding a Stress Model that works for you

The American Psychological Association estimates that stress affects over 60% of the adult population, with factors like work, money, and political unrest contributing to anxiety and sleepless nights. Stress is something that we have to learn to deal with, but there are multiple ways of coping with stress. We all react and respond differently to stress, and our stress levels can rise and fall. While some methods may work brilliantly for you, you will probably find that others don’t have any real impact. If stress is getting you down, or you’re keen to better equip yourself to deal with difficult situations in the future, here are some remedies to try. 

Creative activities
If you find that you struggle to express yourself or to switch off when you’re stressed, creative activities could provide a solution for you. Being creative enables you to channel your emotions and to get things off your chest in a constructive, controlled way. Creative pursuits can also be therapeutic, and many people find them enjoyable. If you’re focused on writing a song or drawing a picture, for example, you might forget about the awful meeting you had that day or the upcoming interview that is making you nervous. You don’t have to be an award-winning author or an artistic genius to benefit from letting your creative juices flow. As long as you’re having fun or you feel relaxed, that’s all that matters. 

Physical activity
If you’re stressed out, you might long to curl up on the sofa, but if you can muster up the energy to move your body, you’ll reap the rewards. Exercise is a proven natural stress-buster, which will make you feel better the moment your heart rate starts to increase. Exercise increases the levels of serotonin and dopamine in your brain, and it also triggers the release of endorphins. As well as making you feel great, exercise also improves sleep habits, and it can help to distract you from sources of stress. There are so many ways you can be more active. From going for a run and hitting the gym to doing a dance class, playing tennis or taking your bike out, find activities that you enjoy.

Many people prefer to try natural remedies before exploring stress relief treatments like medication, for example. One of the most common symptoms of stress is insomnia. If you’re experiencing sleep troubles, there are various things you can do to try and alleviate anxiety and worry and promote calmness and relaxation.
