Keeping healthy when your job requires you to sit all day

Whether you’re working in a company as an employee and have a desk job or are working for yourself from home and also sitting at a desk all day, you may have heard the news that sitting is the new smoking.

Whilst that certainly doesn’t mean that you’re not allowed to sit down and rest when needed, it’s important to remember that staying active is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle, so it’s really something to think about when you’re having to sit all day and a good idea to make sure that even though you’re not doing a physical job, you still need to be looking out for your health and safety.

That’s why we’ve compiled some of our top tips below on how exactly you can do this.

Maintain good posture:

People who sit at desks all day often suffer from back and neck pain due to poor posture that’s a result of incorrect seating and desk alignment, so you need to make sure that you’re sitting at a desk in the correct way to avoid injuring yourself or causing bad posture which can result in further problems and even needing to see a doctor. If you’re looking to speak with a doctor about any particular orthopedic issues, then you should definitely do a search here to find one that comes recommended:

Take breaks:

When you’re employed in a company, there’s a legal requirement for you to be offered and to take breaks throughout the day. So make sure you use these because they will not only benefit your overall levels of concentration and focus, but it’s a good time to get up and stretch your legs a little so you don’t get stiff from sitting all day.

Eat healthy:

Often when working in an office or even when working from home, it can be tempting to eat unhealthy snacks like chocolate or fast food because it’s sometimes easier. However, if you don’t want to crash and burn right after lunch time and have no energy left for the day then you need to make sure you’re eating healthy and nutritious foods that will give you energy to keep you going during the day.

Stay hydrated:

Water is one of the best things you can drink at anytime of the day, but especially if you’re sitting at a desk for hours at a time, then it’s really going to benefit you to stay hydrated. Drinking water is healthier than anything else you can drink and will keep your energy levels up during the day, too, so it’s really important that you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water throughout the day.

Although that sounds like a lot, it’s really not that much when you’re breaking it up over an 8 hour work day, and we promise you’ll notice the difference after a few days of drinking more water.
