FINDING A THERAPIST

Why is it so easy to discuss any disease but mental illness is shyed from?

Here are two situations

  1. So you go to the Dr because your not feeling well...they do blood tests, X-rays, everything is back and Dr calls to see you to discuss your results and the Dr tells you its hyperthyroid or something else and you immediately tell your family, post on Facebook and ask for prayers and advice on how to get better...
  2. You go to the Dr because you're not feeling well...they do blood tests, X-rays, everything is back and Dr calls to see you... You are diagnosed with mental illness ...

You want the ground to open and swallow you up because you have the reputation of it all together..great job, beautiful family, loving husband etc... So there is no way you can have a mental illness...

You leave the office but you do not research it, you do not tell anyone, you keep it hidden from everyone close to you, can I ask why? I am not judging, I do the same thing, in fact, I have battled depression and mental illness for nearly 15 years and to this day I have never had the conversation with my parents, I have never told them what I battle. It is not something I should hide but I do but one thing I have learned from online therapy is that this is the same as any illness that you can diagnose you with, it is a daily struggle for me, but with the right help you can live a normal life.

One thing my therapist has told me is that this is a sickness, it is a illness.
What Is Depression?

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.

Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood-- > my moods are all over the place
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed--> I love going to movies but now lately I have severe anxiety over it
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting---> stress eating Hello
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much--> I can sleep during the day but at night not a chance, my mind races
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue--> I barely make it thru the work day because I am so tired
  • Feeling worthless or guilty--->I never feel good enough, or I dont deserve happiness, but why don't I?
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions---> I am so thankful my husband is my sounding board
  • Thoughts of death or suicide- please immediatly call someone if you have these thoughts, we are here to help you.
