As we get older, it's more about making smart choices rather than completely overhauling our lives. When we are approaching a new decade, we have to be aware that deteriorating health is not necessarily about big issues, but rather more subtle aspects that need addressing. While of course, there will be the potential for big problems, the best method of preventing any form of deteriorating health is about having solid choices. So how can you live your best life in this respect?

Regular Check-Ups

If we are to tackle any subtle signs of deteriorating health, the best way to do it is to have regular check-ups. It's one of those things that we can put off because we don't think we have time, but if we are to look after our health, we've got to go for that check-up with the doctor, but also not neglect our senses. Hearing is one of those things that can gradually deteriorate. It doesn't necessarily happen overnight, it can start by losing lower or higher frequencies. You can learn more about low-frequency hearing loss and see if you have any signs yourself, but your priority should be to go and get your health checked on a regular basis.

Focus on Your BMI

Your BMI or body mass index is the best way to check if you are at a good weight for your height. The BMI scale is as follows:

  • Under 18.5: underweight

  • 18-24.9: normal

  • > 25-29.9: overweight

  • > 30: obese

If you are classed as obese or overweight, you are at a higher risk of developing more serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and certain cancers. Checking your body mass is a very simple thing to make sure that you are on the right path.

Get Moving

One of the problems many others have is thinking that we have to go to a gym. There is always that influx of gym memberships after Christmas, but the realities of modern life mean that we either can't commit, or we find it too difficult. It doesn't have to be intense all the time. In fact, the three key components that exercise involve frequency, intensity, and time. If you are able to get a good balance between the three of them, you are providing a solid foundation for your health. It's also important to remember that if you think you need to start exercising more intensely to make up for lost time, this could be bad for you. Exercising is about ensuring you recover so you can get stronger. But also remember the exercise can have a cumulative effect. You don't need to exercise for an hour a day. You can do a little bit here and there, and it will all add up.

Focus on Being Restful

Of course, having a good night's sleep is essential, but being restful is the goal. Some people talk about having a certain number of hours per night, but you might find that you will sleep better if you incorporate restfulness into your life. Stress is going to have a big impact on your ability to relax. If you start to learn how to unwind properly, not just before you go to sleep, but in your life, you will be able to tackle stress properly, but you will also be able to see a big impact on your quality of sleep. Quality is far more important than quantity. Some people struggle to have good quality sleep, but this is where practices that involve deep states of restfulness can be as effective. If you ever find yourself awake in the middle of the night, learning to be restful rather than focusing on the fact that you're not asleep could mean you will drift back to sleep quicker.

Everything in Moderation

Many people feel that getting older should be about having to rain in every single aspect of your unhealthy habits. But it's about having the quality of life as well. While health is crucial, and you have to take it seriously, you've got to give yourself permission to lighten the load. Enjoying life is obviously important, and if we spent all our time eating salads and exercising, this would only mean a lot of regrets later in life. Make sure that you have everything in moderation, and if you want to have an ice cream sundae, do it! Just be aware of when these indulgences have a serious impact on your health!

There are subtle signs of deteriorating health, but the best thing we can do is to have a preventative mindset, while also making sure that we are enjoying our lives.
