How to Avoid Plumber Call Outs in the Winter

The last thing you want is for something to go wrong with the boiler on Christmas day or one of the holidays, it is expensive and inconvenient, and it can ruin the day you can plan for many weeks. Boiler issues in winter are avoidable, simply service your boiler and insulate pipes.

Boiler Service

Would you rather pay a small fee to have your boiler checked before the winter weather comes in, you pay a large sum to have it fixed with a plumbing callout during the cold season? If you’re like most people, you will choose the former. Boilers also need checking at least once a year.

During a boiler service, the technician with test the system and ensure it is operating to full capacity; they will also perform important safety checks. After having your boiler serviced, you can be sure that your system is working safely and efficiently during winter and avoid callouts.

Plan Ahead

For most of the year, the boiler is switched off, especially through the summer months, but this is one of the reasons boilers fail in the winter, and a technician callout is required. Boilers are complex systems that run throughout the property; when not in use, they can easily cease up.

If you want to avoid expensive callouts in the winter or on important dates like Christmas, bank holidays, or at 2 am, make sure you test your system regularly throughout the year. All you have to do is switch the heating on for fifteen minutes now and then and test for any boiler issues.

Home Maintenance

Hopefully, your boiler is covered by insurance, so you don’t have to fork out for a professional to visit in the depths of winter. If you are in rented accommodation, the boiler should be covered by your landlord, but if you are a homeowner, you will have to find your own boiler insurance cover.

Before you invest in boiler insurance, it’s a good idea to have your systems checked over by a professional so that you can be sure it’s in perfect working order - this will get you a better price for your insurance. Paying for boiler insurance ensures that your system is always in order.

Pipe Insulation

There is a significant risk of burst pipes in the winter, especially when you don’t insulate them or maintain some minimum flow in the taps. Insulating pipes is easy, and anyone in the home with some DIY knowledge can carry out the task before the cold weather starts and the pipes freeze.

Visit your local hardware store and buy some foam tubing and tie wraps. Cut the foam tubing down the side and cover all the pipes in the basement; both warm and cold water pipes need to be insulated. Wrap the plastic ties around the pipes to secure them, and keep the water running.

Final Thoughts

Plumber callouts can be expensive, but they can also be avoidable. All you need to do is test your boiler before winter, make sure the boiler is insured, and insulate the water pipes to reduce the risks of them bursting. Remember, a boiler is a complex system that needs annual checking.
