How we keep our daughter safe on line.

I will never forget the day when my daughter who is now 14 wanted to go on facebook for the first time, I was terrified, there were so many dangers lurking and I wasn’t sure if I should allow her, she was 10.
My husband is a computer programmer so he did some thinking, we put some rules in place for her and to this day she is still following them.  I think as parents it is important to have rules in place for kids when it comes to technology.

Some of those rules were:
1) we are to know the password at all times.
2) we are to access it anytime we want to ( this means her phone, computer or ipad)
3) Do not accept any friend request or follow request of anyone you do not know
4) Do not send any pictures of yourself to anyone you do not know
5) You can have family and anyone ask you need permission for
6) Parental Controls! need I say more
7. Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.  Speak to your parent about people suggesting you do
8) Think carefully about what you say before you post something online
9.) Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude
10)   If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.

Maybe we were to hard with the rules, but I want my baby girl to be safe as I have had some real strange follow requests, we wanted her to make the best of her time online not be scared of it

Computer is a tool not an escape. Do not go on the computer and vent your frustrations as that is a sure way to start some heated debates.
